one morning. two ways to spend it.
Come for the coast, without making the whole day a group decision. Our suggestion: start with a short coffee catch-up in Byron town, then choose between a proper headland walk and an unhurried beach stop. Agree on the bigger plan only after you have met.
- Just a hello: allow 45–60 minutes for coffee. Choose the cafe and meeting time in advance.
- A walking morning: leave a half-day free for meeting, reaching the track and exploring at your own pace.
- Keep it simple: bring your own water and snacks; decide separately whether to stay for lunch.
These are our suggested planning windows, not tour durations or bookings.
the lighthouse loop, properly planned.
The Walgun Cape Byron walking track is a 3.7km loop. NSW National Parks suggests 1–3 hours and rates it Grade 3. It passes through rainforest and coastal landscapes on the way to the lighthouse. This is a walk to plan for, rather than a quick detour in beach sandals.
Check the official map together before choosing an entry point. Take water, a hat and sunscreen, remain on the track and keep away from cliff edges. You can use shorter sections if the full loop does not suit both of you. Parking can be limited at weekends, and park entry fees apply.
less walking? make Wategos the plan.
Wategos Beach is another place to build a shorter outing around. Choose a specific public meeting point before leaving, pack a snack and set a time to head back. Treat a beach visit and a swim as different decisions: check conditions and local safety advice before entering the water.
If the weather turns, keep the original cafe catch-up and skip the exposed walk. A good conversation is enough; you do not need to rescue the itinerary by pushing on.
what to budget for.
Make food, transport and parking explicit before you meet. A bring-your-own picnic leaves you in control of food spending; a cafe stop means checking a current menu. If you drive to the reserve, read the official fee information rather than assuming parking is free. Accommodation, equipment hire and tours are separate costs.
For a first meeting, travel independently. Share a public meeting point, not your accommodation address, and leave yourself a clear way home.
